Headboard Foam – Foam for DIY Headboards
A well-made headboard can help to complete the look of your bedroom. While you could choose to buy one readymade, you may find it more worthwhile to make your own. If you’re making a foam headboard, Foam Direct can supply you with the best headboard foam to get the job done right!
Refurbishing A Headboard
It’s relatively easy to refurbish a regular upholstered headboard. Bear in mind though that tufting and other advanced upholstery techniques will be more difficult to replicate.
Which foam you choose is up to you, but we would recommend a soft to medium feel grade. Take a look at our selection of upholstery foam sheets. There are 14 unique grades to choose from including memory foam, recon foam and much more! And, if you still can’t find what you’re looking for, be sure to contact us directly. We may still stock the grade you need.
To refurbish your headboard, start by removing the covering fabric, batting and old foam from the backboard. If you’ve chosen a new fabric, use the old covering fabric as a template for sizing. If you’re keeping the same fabric be sure to carefully remove it, so as not to cause damage.
Once the backboard is bear, take your chosen foam and use a spray adhesive to mount it. Allow to dry and then palace the batting (use new batting if the current one is damaged) and fabric over the headboard foam. Once the fabric is pulled tight over the backboard, you can use a staple gun to secure it.
Fire Safe Headboard Foam
The foam you choose to use in your headboard should be suitable for use in homes and satisfy all fire safety requirements. This is especially the case if you’re making a product to sell (you’ll also need to attach an appropriate fire safety label).
Thankfully at Foam Direct, unless stated otherwise, all of the foam we sell exceeds UK Fire Safety regulations. Even our new and UK-exclusive reticulated foam offers superior fire resistance when compared to other fast-drying foam products on the market.
Remember, always check that the foam you intend to use satisfies the fire safety regulations of your country. If your foam has been imported from overseas, for example, it may not be up to standard. If in doubt, remember that Foam Direct stock fire-safe headboard foam that exceeds the requirements of UK Fire Safety regulations.

What Foam Should I Use?
Foam Direct has plenty of different grades of foam for you to choose from, but not all of them will be suitable for use in a headboard.
The majority of foam we supply is classed as high density. This means that the foam has more weight per-cubic foot than foam of a lower density; as such, it will last you longer. It’s important to note that just because foam has a high density, it does not automatically mean that it has a firm feel. High-density foams can be made to feel hard or soft and we stock plenty of all varieties.
For a headboard, we would personally recommend a high-density foam with a soft to medium feel, depending on your preference. For an extra special headboard foam, you could try something from the Luxury range we offer. We supply our Luxury range of foams in sheet form and as part of our foam cut-to-size service. To buy it in sheet form, head over to our foam sheets page.
